Periodontal Dentistry in Fairfax, VA

Most often the buildup of plaque and tartar when teeth are not brushed and flossed routinely can cause bacterial infection of the gums and tissues that support your teeth. This results in the onset of what is referred to as Periodontal disease.

Sugary food and drinks, and also medical conditions such as diabetes can also contribute to Periodontal disease.

Periodontal diseases occur in 2 stages

  1. Gingivitis: This affects only the gums. It is a mild form of periodontal disease, and if properly treated may be reversed. Left untreated, gingivitis turns into periodontitis.

  2. Periodontitis: This is a more destructive disease stage, in which bacteria penetrates into the deeper pockets of tissue where bone and membrane support your teeth. Periodontitis can lead to tooth loss and serious health problems.

Periodontal disease is usually referred to as a “silent” disease, there is usually no pain accompanying it’s warning signs until it is well advanced.

Scaling and Root Planing

A non-surgical treatment that can be used to treat periodontal disease. During this procedure, the Dentist will carefully remove plaque that has built up around the tooth roots that are under the patient’s gum and clean the area thoroughly.

During this procedure the roots are smoothed to expose and remove harmful bacteria. The process of root smoothing along with the practice of good oral hygiene can help prevent plaque from building up again.
